How did you use your own unique ideas in your work?
I have always loved the concept of roots, trees, and humans being connected to nature deeply. I combined this idea of trees and growth with the idea of humanity and made it my own.
Did you use a source for inspiration, then combine it with your own ideas to make it original?
I found photos of roots, and practiced with the shape of the human figure, and I combined these ideas to create this piece. I also utilized watercolors to make my ideas original, and the roots that follow her up her body are unique and vivid.
Did you learn new techniques or processes as part of the work for this project?
I have never had to work so deeply and thoroughly with clay as I did during this project. Honestly this project helped me gain a lot of confidence in and outside of my artistic mind. I grew greatly, along with my piece, during its creation.
Did you gain skill with familiar materials?
I have never used clay on the level that I had to use it during this project. I explored it probably more than I ever wanted to (haha). I am so proud of this project, and especially the detail and precision that it required.
What problems did you encounter in the animal head that helped you with this piece?
In doing my animal head piece, I learned that attention to detail and precision is demanded in order to sculpt clay. I had a lot of trouble attempting to get the proportions of the polar bear correct, and I was able to carry the skills that I learned in overcoming this problem into my final figure project.
Why did you pick the piece you did? Does it have special meaning to you?
I love the concept of us being connected to nature, and I used this love of humanity and nature to build this piece. The piece has a lot of special meaning to me.
